A thought provoker

October 29, 2007 everno Leave a comment

I received this through Darren Straight’s Blog, he is a Microsoft Student Partner.

Here is the Blog info.

A Vision of Students Today is a video created by Professor Michael Wesch and the 200 students enrolled in ANTH 200: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University, Spring 2007. It began as a brainstorming exercise, thinking about how students learn, what they need to learn for their future, and how our current educational system fits in.

It’s pretty interesting to watch, plus you can also get a transcript of the A Vision of Students Today video here.

Enjoy!

k12 Online Conference

I have just finished watching David Warlick’s “fireside chat”.  It really had a lot of good information.

One quote that really STRUCK me was when he commented about his generation being the last to watch Dad and see their future.  Definitely a powerful statement.

My children growing up, 23 months and 3 years, don’t know what is “out there”.  This throws another curve ball for Mom’s and Dad’s.. preparing their kids for an “unknown” future…as well as teachers!

OK… I know this is something that they have just provided a video for… but it really looks awesome!  It takes what I love of OneNote and adds another dimension to it!

     Check it out for yourself!

Prekindergarten teachers: Big Brown Bear Software has an engaging site for little learners who are experiencing the joy of meeting the alphabet for the first time. Magnetic letters is a fun resource that allows students to simulate playing with magnetic refrigerator letters that can be moved about on a monitor screen. Playing around with this resource may increase the likelihood of boys and girls repeating such word play at home with real magnetic letters. Consider using Magnetic letters with an interactive whiteboard.

Scriblink is an online digital whiteboard that allows you collaborate with others online through writing on a digital whiteboard. You can invite up to five people to join your board at a time and can talk to your guests through an in-screen chat function. You can write on your board using different colors and shapes and theres a layout toolkit to help you with the complex stuff.
If you don’t have people to collaborate with but feel the need to draw the site also has a “Universal Board” where you can get together with random people from around the world and get your scribble on.

http://live.pirillo.com/ – A user writes in to ask if there are more apps they can put on a USB stick and run from there? YES! You can put more than just an email and a browser on a USB stick… including an entire operating system!

There are tons of apps that you can throw onto a USB stick and use it. Provided you have enough space on your USB stick, you can have several programs on there all at once.

Here are a few sites that list several of the apps available for use from a USB stick:

  • PortableApps.com Tagged as “Your Digital Life: Anywhere.” There is an excellent “new” feature along the right side.
  • Makeuseof.com Excellent site with a smaller listing of apps and tools.
  • Loosewire.typepad.com is a HUGE site, full of information and portable resources. Separated into easy-to-navigate categories, this comprehensive list even includes Security Programs, a complete VoIP package, and much more.

What other sites and suggestions do you have for our friend? As always, leave me a comment or shoot me an email.

Subject: Microsoft Outlook Tip: Overlay Calendars in Outlook (like Google Calendaroutlookoverlay.png
Google Calendar makes it easy to manage multiple calendars and display them all at once, but did you know you can do the same with Microsoft Outlook? The How-to Geek explains that while it’s possible (Update: to keep more than one calendar) in Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007 makes it easy to see multiple calendars at once:

First you’ll need to change to the Calendar view, and then select more than one calendar in the list. Now if you hover your mouse over the little arrow icon next to the second calendar you’ll notice it says “View in Overlay Mode.” Of course you should just click the icon at this point.

The two calendars then merge into one view, and you can switch between them using the tabs.
